Hello Ela- Welcome to the board No one has used the Queries section in some five years or so, not really sure why not. Questions tend to get asked in different areas but in an case nice to see something in this section. You sound like you've done quite a bit of reading into secondary literature in this field if your able to recommend Katz and Sallaberger. In any case about your question, I will email someone about it and get back to you in a number of days. Best Regards

Yes, I have been reading the last ten years, jjjj
Thank you a lot if you can send me something good about the toponymy and the situation in map of the ancient places.
I am not only interested in South and Northern mesopotamy, but also about les settlements du 3rd Millenium in Iran and Siria. I am following the trail of the cult of some gods.
thank you a lot, us4-he2-gal2!

Hi Ela, welcome on board. I compile a list of UR III places at the moment. After that i may do a ED one. But that will take some time. I started the UR III list by looking for "@gn" (Geographical Name) entries here: cdli.ox.ac.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=ur_iii_lemmata_lists . And now im looking through CDLI for names not in the lemmata list by using the CDLI search function (more than 2700 results for {ki}...oh boy).

Hello Ela: Sorry for the slow response - I have a few suggestions now. First, the obvious suggestion or the general suggestion for a first place to look on most archaeological problems in Mesopotamia is Michael Roaf's book The Cultural Atlas of Mesopotamia and the Ancient Near East. On pg. 83 Roaf provides a map of the cities given in the Sumerian King List. On 58 a less detailed map reporesenting the Uruk expansion in the Uruk period. And on pg.109 he has a map of kingdoms in the isin-Larsa period. Another approach is you may want to become familiar with the AMAR database if you aren't yet. It is a massive and very sophisticated database from Stony Brook University which has digitalized hundreds of Mesopotamian site reports, books published by the original excavators etc. If you search by author for Adams at this site, you will find Roberts McCormick Adams book Heartland of Cities - I know he does surveys of settlements in early periods like Uruk before - he may have something for ED I'm not sure. The links are: amar.hsclib.sunysb.edu/amar/amar.hsclib.sunysb.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/amar&CISOPTR=152166&REC=1Also, I asked Prof. Reichel in class last week about the problem of finding a good map of ED sites mentioned in administrative texts and so on, he suggested RGTC a series I have never yet seen and which appears to be in French. I would imagine this series is relatively hard to find and access, it seems to be a dozen books or so maybe - likely it is only carried in university libraries, universities with an ANE department. The series is: RGTC (aka Rép. géogr.) : Répertoire géographique des textes cunéiformes (= TAVO Beihefte Reihe B Nr.7 1974 ff.) All I know for now. Can help more when exams are over though - less than two weeks time

Here are the results from my search for "{ki" in the UrIII period. The names without a "{ki}" are from the cdli lemmata lists. linkPlease keep in mind that not all of these entries will be cities, some may be placenames as well. This is a fantastic attention and determination Sheshki! Really the sort of involvement with the data one needs to work in this field, although I suspect many students would loss heart if confronted with such a task 0_0 But in Assyriology, tedium goes hand in hand with results. This is the sort of effort Frayne would love, while most of the field knows him for his work on Royal Inscriptions, his real love seems to be geography and maps. Not something I know alot about so I usually blank out when he is talking geography hm.

Here are my CDLI search results for place names of the ED period. I start with some names that are probably temple names.
Here is what our member darkl said about it: "with those 'a3 names it seems to me like they are just using a fancy transliteration for e2, for the reasons that i outlined before, they are trying to transliterate it in a way that it looks more like how it must have really sounded..."
'a3#-bur-gul#{ki} 'a3#-duru5{ki} 'a3#-ISZ#-E2{ki#} 'a3#-ur4-ad{ki#} 'a3-{d}inanna#{ki} 'a3-|LAGABxBAD|-a{ki} 'a3-bur-gul{ki} 'a3-du3{ki#} 'a3-dur:ur4{[ki]} 'a3-ir-rim3{ki} 'a3-luh-dar#{ki} 'a3-SZESZ-IB{ki} 'a3-ur4-ad{ki} 'a3-wu-ur4#{ki#}
