Thread Orientation: Below is an effort to note the loose ends which I personally have in mind, and hope to return to as is possible. The things on this thread may be interpreted as subjects any interested member could pick up and work on anytime, they are also those things I will personally work as the time and material find me - I expect most threads will forever remain a work in progress as we grow, information is refined, and as, in many cases, the field itself develops. These are therefore things that have come and signs of what is to come, any are welcome to add their own loose end commitments below in similar fashion. Also, I have a list (bigger I think) of topics that still havent been started which Ill post shortly as well.
(Loose ends on the...)
Mesopotamian Magic Board:
- UrIII Incantations: 12 UrIII Incantations from the Cunningham catalogue remain to be obtained
- UrIII Ritual and Ceremony: Pending the acquisition of some of the UrIII incantations particularly TEXT 54a (Krebernik) consideration of the Ritual tablet [CBS 8241] will not be able to proceed.
- UrIII Discussion and Categorization: As more incantations are added, work to categorize them will be an essential aspect of a detailed study. Id like to gain more inroads into Sumerian material culture in order to discuss ritual items more intelligently.
- Devils and Evil Spirits: CT16 + CT17: This thread has successfully scouted and outlined Thompson's 1904 work and the incantation series utukku limnûtu, and any modern translations there of. All that remains is the addition of a few incantations.
General:
- Vampire thread: - Nergal/Gidim/Lilitu/Lamaštu: Still more blood thirsty fiends to plow through.
- Demon types vs Groups of individuals: A comparison between demon groupings in the myth and the magic may prove illuminating
- Udug Hul Texts: I will review all content here and look forward to talking Old Babylonian magic in time.
Discussion board:
- Pre-Sargonic Literary Compositions: Besides the UD.GAL.NUN, There are some 23 compositions to be considered here all expected to be hard to obtain a translation for.
- Numerology: The stage would now seem more or less set for a discussion of Young's numeral ideas and explanations for the Regnal span - Ive been trying to gain the mathematical wherewithal to sum his first article here
- Necromancy: Necromancy is an extremely interesting topic for me, however its a topic attested to in relatively few ANE publications, and discussion cannot proceed without their acquisition (see thread for specifics)
- Sisig thread: Further consideration of Sisig might be facilitated by the acquisition of 1998 Mesopotamian Conceptions of Dreams and Dream Rituals. AOAT 258 (S.A.L. Butler) ; As well a paper by Alhena Gadotti "Enkidu Revivied" seems to offer "a re-examination of the nature of the Sumerian
term si.si.ig" though Ive had no luck obtaining this. See www.umich.edu/~aos/2004/Abstracts2004.pdf (Additionally, the entire thread is now quite overdue for an overhaul).
- Overall Incorporeality: This thread would especially benefit from further comments on ki-sikil-lil-la, IM (as spirit), Sisig, and Zaqiqu - also a review of the article "The lil2 of Enlil2" by T> Jacobsen might prove of high interest,
- The Living Soul in Sumer: My painful struggle to understand the full religious sentiment behind zi, -was the breath of life interpretable as the living soul?- Has not produced and definitive scholarly consensus or commentary. Though not Sumerian in focus, the work ""Ghost and God:Some Observations on a Babylonian Understanding of Human Nature" By Tzvi Abusch may prove helpful here.
- Enmesharra: A review of Enmesharra would be particularly interesting in light of Binsbergen and Wiggermanns theoretical approach to magic - click here - and Sanford K. Goldfless [Ph.D]: “Babylonian Theogonies: Divine Origins in Ancient Mesopotamian Religion and Literature” Said to examine the 'lore of ancestor-god Enmesharra
Sumerologistics board:
- Departments and Collections List: Besides filling in some Id
missed in US/UK , next up is Austria and Germany, but we have the University of Wien already, (Thx Nadia )
- From Fingers to Forks: The long hard road to sophistication and typographical correctness in ANE discussion - Im going to need to put something together on the range and use of the Determinative shortly.
- Periodicals: This thread should be expanded to include the less essentials as well.
