I am a non German speaker with a question! Anyone read Grundzuge einer Geschichte der Fruhzeit des Vorderen Orients, Hans J Nissen?? I am reading its translation into English. It unfortunately was not translated so well, most reviews on the book tend to focus on that. I am wondering what the general opinion is of the book from those who can enjoy it in it's native language.

Nissen's "Geschichte des Vorderen Orients" is generally godd, because it's very concise and especially because it puts the prehistoric periods into a historical context. On the other hand, it's not very extensive, one should check other sources for detailed information - but for a first look on any historical period of the ANE, it's the easiest possibility (if you speak German, that is).

Alles Liebe!
Oh, and "Geschichte Altvorderasiens", however, HAS some minor problems, like, for example taking nonproven historical assumptions - like Gilgamesh as an actual king of Uruk and the chronological line, which is not accounted for at all - for granted. It's still very useful if you need to look sth. up quickly.

Oh hiya Luise! Glad to see you around and also posting on this section! It's tough keeping the AltOrientalistik section going when you rely on Piggeldy and Frederick for your German vocabulary you know 0_0 www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgWU63fYDZg

"Luise, weißt du, wo ein Buch über XY in der Bibliothek steht?" "Nichts leichter als das!", sagte Luise, "Komm mit."

Re: "Was ist auf?" Lolz, as the kids say. What's up is that, in the middle of writing my thesis, I had to move to another appartment due to dramatic decline of my health, because my already asthmathic lungs didn't go well with the damp basement appartment we lived in getting ever more moldy during the rainy Tübingen summer. In short, I caught the curse of the pharaoh, and my doctor strongly advised me to relocate. Nerve-wracking fights with the landlord (bitch won't give me my money back) and search for a new place that costs less than a leg and two fingers a month ensued. I did finish the Magister thesis (after getting the University to give me 2 months more time) and we did find a nice new place, so I am now preparing for my exams. I honestly don't know where the last months went. Suddenly it's spring again...

Dear LouiseSophie: Well, I'm glad to see the occasional social note here at enenuru and besides that, this is good illustration of the ANE student life for any persons wondering about studying in the field - although your particular student life style seems to involve more than your fair share of housing troubles and complications from what I can see I think most of us are plagued with organization and income issues, with only occasional visits from the housing demon. Best of luck on the exams then - perhaps your thesis will make its way to enenuru someday in German (or maybe even English? ) Bill

EVERYBODY who studies in Tübingen has more than the usual share of housing troubles. It is a small town in a fairly rural part of Germany, and a quarter of the population consists of students. There a re simply not enough appartments to house everybody decently, and landlords take advantage of this situation by overpricing the rents outrageously. On the other hand, I'm in the privileged situation (even for Germany) that my parents can help me out financially, so I don't have to sacrifice too much study-time for work.
I can try and post an English abstract of my thesis here someday when I have more time on my hands. It's pretty good, actually, in my not-so-humble opinion. Busted some myths that have been going around for the past century or so.
