My (MINI) Hanging Gardens Yesturday I was shopping around Chapters a little bit with a few friends - I usually don't go shopping at popular bookstores for the reason that they generally don't carry anything so good as I can easily get at the university library.. but I do sometimes enjoy browsing even if I don't really find anything overly impressive and it was a social occasion. This time I happened to come across something seemingly Mesopotamian - to my great suprise 0_0 And of course, it wasn't in the World history section - it was on the cheap novelty stand! __________________________ __________________________ Yes, it was a tiny "Grow your own" Hanging Gardens of Babylon box set. Upon seeing this box set, I couldn't help but remember my comrade and fellow cuneiform student Drew, who is even now sign making like crazy while at the same time musing on how one might create the most Babylonian like garden (in the middle of the US.) My hope was less that running press (the makers of the box set) would get us particularly far in an endevor such as that, but that they may include at least a little botanical insight. On opening the boxset I found the following: __________________________ __________________________ A) A booklet B) a bit of pete moss and 6 seedlings C) plastic pieces of a palace looking thing. On reading over the booklet for any sign of insight on Mesopotamian botany, I was rather sorely disappointed. Perspective seemed somewhat general, with lines such as "it may seem odd for scholars to make such a fuss about the Hanging Gardens in Babylon, considering that gardens are found almost anywhere." I suppose a reasonable assessment is given of the general history and construction of the gardens, however I wouldn't rely on such a source for this board under any circumstances - so I'll just quote the final line: "Until archaeologists learn more, we will need to rely on imagination, the legends, and this kit, to envision how amazing it must have been." And with that in mind, I present the constructed structure: __________________________ __________________________ To follow: Day One

Day One Pete Moss is getting wet. Day One: According to the booklet, the first step is to soak the Pete Moss for 24 hours. Kinds sucks 0_0 Oh well. See you on Day Two.

Xuch: Thats a valid question for sure, however for this thread I aim to confine myself to growing my own my hanging gardens - we might certainly start a new thread to explore such questions academically however!
Day Two WTF!!!!!!!!!! My little castle is broken!!!
After letting the Pete Moss soak overnight I noticed it had expanded to the extent that the top part of the palace no longer fit on the bottom when this huge bit of soil is stuck in the middle! - I was pretty sure this was a fatal flaw built into the box set and it was going to look stupid - but then I realized.. you have to cut the net and dump the soil into the base! Then it's planting time: After planting the seeds in the soil, and applying a plastic wrap (humidity barrior), day two was done. Next, according to the booklet, sprouts show begin to appear in only...4 to 7 weeks!! 0_0 good lord. Still to come... Sprouts on day 45 or so! See you on day 45.....

I agree with Frank on this one - we must have photographic evidence of these fabled Babylonian Garden Pubes - PHOTOGRAPHIC 0_0

DAY 65 Ok.............. I *may* have forgot about my grow my own Babylonian Garden somewhere during the last 65 growing days... I mean just grow you stupid seeds thats what I bought you for!! Perhaps I got a little fed up with staring at an empty desert on my desk day after day - I probably stopped watering it at some point. Yes, just when I was about to throw it out one day I looked - and to my surprise I saw this: ________________________________
________________________________ Well, I guess I had been a little rewarding to see life emerge in the unlikliest of places - the return of a Babylonian garden of a sort - possibly a little less lush then anticipated. 0_0 Still to come...... Another sprout?
