I am currently involved in the production of a film that deals with some ANE related material. The film is going to be called "The Cult of Dagon". It is set in the modern era but involves a cult that worships the Babylonian god of grain (and perhaps fish) Dagon. I have two inquiries regarding this:
I'd like to learn more about the worship of Dagon in Mesopotamia. I am currently reading translated excerpts from the dutch book "The god Dagon in Bronze Age Syria" by LluĂs Feliu. However this book mainly focuses the worship of Dagon in the western fertile crescent and spends way to much time going over possible etymologies. I would like to learn more about the worship of Dagon in Mesopotamia, specifically the god's cult center in Mari. It is my understanding that Mari is a well excavated and accordingly well understood city-state. Unfortunately I have mainly focused on learning about the Sumerian cities in the south of Mesopotamia and I have neglected learning about Mari. Do the Mari archieves tell us anything of the Temple there? The name of his temple in Ebla was the Emul "House of Stars". Do we know of another name for his temple in Mari?
My second topic of inquiry is this: In the film there is an incantation in Sumerian to bring a character back from the dead (although they return possessed by a demon). Obviously there is no historical Sumerian resurrection incantation that I could reference (that would have made Gilgamesh a lot shorter) however I would like to make the fictional incantation as authentic sounding as possible. So far I'm starting with Enenuru and then going on to call upon Ereshkigal and perhaps other characters referenced in "Inana's descent into the underworld". Any suggestions?
