KAR 44
(A "Manual")
KAR 44 has for a long time been a fairly unique document with extent cuneiform magical literature: This item basically similar to the Old Babylonian catalogues that have been found which list off literature, myths hymns etc., by their incipit (their opening line.) KAR 44 also makes such a list but of incantations pertaining to the magic practice of the Ashipu in about 800 B.C. Also, some of the lines may refer to cultic practice and materia magica. Goff observes the purposes of the incantations listed are varied enough that the Ahsipu must have been "a royal official, responsible for great ceremonials; but his concerns embraced all the activities of both the great state and individuals."
This list and/or its instructions are sometimes refered to as a 'Magicians manual' of sorts, and it is best known from the cuneifrom tablet KAR 44, which cdli pictures and I have linkd below:

In the below section, I have reproduced M. J. Geller's transliteration of KAR 44 from his article Incipits and Rubrics which is itself available in the volume Wisdom, Gods and Literature: Assyriological Studies in Honour of W.G. Lambert, 2000.) Geller presents the latest and most reliable transliteration of this tablet together with several new duplicates published for the first time, however, since KAR 44 is basically complete I have rendered his presentation of the the text from this tablet only.
On the content of KAR 44:
In his talk, Geller had explained that an incantation text on average demonstrates the following arrange meant:
- Initial Rubric (en2-e2-nu-ru
- Incipit (or 'title', the first line of the text by which it is known)
- body of texts
- end rubric (e.g. ka-inim-ma udug-hul-a-kim.. incantation against the udug demon)
It's very important to note that while many catalogue like texts list compositions that the ancients knew by their incipit, KAR 44, as Geller says, "is not a list of incipits, but rather a list of incantation rubrics, although the the ka-inim-ma formula has been omitted in each instance." So while an incantation text would text would end typically with something like ka-inim-ma udug-hul-kim, KAR 44 lists in this case "udug-hul-kim". Geller adds: "The catalogue of rubrics occasionally cites associated incipits as glosses, in the same way that the incipit catalogues occasions record the corresponding ka-inim-ma rubrics."

(a) is: In Geller's 2000 presentation he includes an Appendix to Text E (Kar 44), in which he treats and identifies the rubrics given on this list (remember, it is a 'rubric catalogue' for the most part. Geller states "the indentifications mostly do not repeat the discussion found in Bottero, Annuaire 1974/1975, but rather attempt to supplement his notes in a condensed format. (a) is left as 'N/A' where Geller is not able to identify a rubric or does not supply additional information
(b) is: Ross Sinclair's adaption of Bottero 1974/1975 which (as is noted about under secondary sources) appears to offer the only English translations even if partially. The correctness of this source or of Bottero's original translations, can be to some extent ascertained by (a) (which largely overlaps). I am always grateful for Ross's efforts, which can be see at the Babylonian Magick page.
(c) is: Geller has further supplied the reader with a correspondance of secondary literary - each time an incantation that has been recovered and treated by modern scholars is referred to in the list, Geller cites the publication information (which I reproduce here.) I have linked the given rubric with the publication reference with blue numerals.
