Thread Orientation: My friend Lara is not feeling well this week, and so I promised here I would post a get-well incantation.

I have found a good one I think after checking a few indexs, however I do not own the book it is located in. Therefore, bear with me and I think someone might have it and I am emailing them. Hopefully, since this book is known for having broken and fragmented texts, the one desired will be complete or close to complete!

Well. ahhhh... Hrm 0_0 Yes that definitely is an incantation, so thank you Naomi We are looking perhaps for a specific incantation, and so Madness confirms for me this specific incantation is actually not given in the book it is listed under (YOS XI). And so we have Naomi's interesting (and I don't if I would say spontaneous) example to work with until I might get the another Mesopotamian one in from Toronto. Excellent

Thanks Naomi and Bill, I'm feeling much better already! Illness is gone, but I somehow managed to transfer it to my kids (which was not my purpose at all...or perhaps I'm just doing it wrong) So we're still in need of incantations here. Anything that will banish fever and cough is especially welcome

Frustration YOS 80 11 I have to report frustration with my attempt to procure the desirable get-well-Lara incantation. Originally, having the impression it was something to do with breathing problems, I sought an incantation that dealt with lung disease. This issue seems to be relatively rarely addressed in the incantation lore and I can only spot 2 instances in Cunningham's list of over 300 Old Babylonian incantations which are specifically against lung disease. Both entries, pertaining to the tablet YOS 80 11 (pictured above) and VS 17 29 (which are identical) refer the reader to "Cavigneaux and Al Rawi 1995 p. 37" for a treatment of these texts. So, I ordered from Toronto a photo copy of the relevant article which is printed in ZA 1995 and entitled "Textes Magiques de Tell Haddad." (Which its ancient Me-turan.) Finally the photocopy has come in and I have a chance to skim the French article in as effective a way as I am able - turning to page 37 it become quickly apparent to me that there is NOT AN ENTIRE TRANSLATION GIVEN! Arg. Even if Cavigneaux and Al Rawi were put off by the little remaining text in YOS 80 11, they could probably refer to VS 19 29 which as we see at the CDLI link, seems fairly intact. However, it is apparent that despite Cunningham's reference, these scholars are not trying to translate the text at all, but refer to the texts in a footnote only...becayse they relate in some way to some other text the authors are actually dealing with 0_0 In any case I will type what they do say on it in the small chance an understanding may be gained from their comment. Of course, we would need to see if a nice French reader may come along as well: Cavigneaux and Al Rawi 1995 p.37:
MA 36-37. L'emphase est presque comique. YOS 11 80: 1-2 (// VS 17.29: 1-2) id-mah zi-ga-gin7 ša2-ba bu-lu-uh2 ba-ni-ib du3 <<comme si c'était un grand fleuve en crue, il provoqué des gargouillis dans le ventre>>. Ce type de métaphore s'inspire du style littéraire, ou le parodie.
Still to come.... I guess we need a need get-well-Lara incantation!

Re passing an illness on to ones kids...
From a Mesopotamian point of view there is an important distinction between the cause of the disease and the effect of the disease. Many, though a few scholars argue all, illnesses were thought to be caused by demons. These are beings who figuratively strike us and cause us harm.
The spiritual banishing of a sickness demon can therefore allow you to get better by taking away that which is causing you harm, but it will not work instantly as some harm has already been done.
Ideally I would cast a protection on the affected individual as a first step, protect the home as a second step, make offerings to healing entities such as Ninazu, and fourth to work to simulate physical healing.
