60 minutes did a segment on modern Iraq a few months ago, and I happen to catch it. Apparently, Saddam Hussein rerouted all the water in the swamp marshes so people could not live on it. There's only a few marshes left, and it used to be vast and filled with lush vegetation. It is considered the largest damage to the environment caused by a human this century. However, the marshes that are left still have people that live almost the same as people did of ancient Sumer. They even weave reeds still. There is a man who is trying to restore the swamp and the culture of the land. He goes into length about ancient Mesopotamia and how this area is the cradle of civilization. The reason I find it so neat is that you actually get to see how life was like in ancient Sumer, centuries ago. It's not on youtube, so I have to link it; www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5658502n
