Dumuzi the Gods
1. Thanks very much for this excellent contribution. I think your discussion of the god Dumuzi is well written, very insightful! The stories about Dumuzi provide us with a picture of how the ancients saw the natural world around them, fertility of plants and animals. Your careful consideration of of Dumuzi's character reveals his special role in Mesopotamian religion. Your comments on Dumuzi, Dumuzi-Abzu and Dumuzi-Amaushum-gal-ana are also very impressive, because the difference between these deities is obscure and little known. Do you use Thorkild Jacobsen's work?
Below I have posted a comment made about Dumuzi from Bendt Alster's book "DUMUZI'S DREAM: Aspects of Oral Poetry in a Sumerian Myth" page 14:
"...the account of Dumuzi's death in the two myths "Inanna's Descent" and "Dumuzi's Dream"... In the former he dies when his wife Inanna hands him over to the Nether World as a substitute for herself, whereupon he is allowed to return to life half the year because his sister enters as a substitute for him. According to the latter he dies when demons destroy his sheepfold on the desert. In the first case we may say that a widespread theme, "the rescue by substitution," has been exemplified in a tale of the world of Dumuzi ; in the other we recognize a story of the dangerous daily life of the shepherds on the plain, disguised in the mythological language of the Dumuzi literature, where the demons represent bandits attacking the shepherds, while at the same time Dumuzi's death is associated with the seasonal ceasing Of the milk production. Similarly, Cl. Wilcke has expressed the opinion that the Dumuzi text TMHNF III 25 reflects a love story from the daily life ("einer wohl nicht allzu seltene Situation des Alltags") which implies that it îs to be considered as information of daily life in Sumer rather than of the Sumerian gods. Consequently, the character of Dumuzi cannot be defined by a simple adding up of the available information, and thereby straightforwardly drawing a conclusion."

dama-ušumgal-an-na: 1) For the latest study of this name see M.Fritz, AOAT 307, 269-271; M Krebernik, Studies Wilcke, 153-156; 166-167; 3) Associated with Lugaluru(b) in pre-Sargonic Lagaš; eventually assimilated to Dumuzi.
ddumu-zi(-d): 1) "`noble`Child" (see M Fritz, AOAT 307, 271f.; M Krebernik, Studies Wilcke, 151-153); 2) God of Badtibira; 3) There are two traditions, one about Dumuzi the fisherman and one about Dumuzi the shepherd. The fisherman is from Ku´ara, the shepherd from Badtibira. The latter is also Inanna´s "husband" whom she sends to the underworld as a substitute for herself. He is the archetypal disappearing and dying god.
ddumu-zi-abzu: 1)"`noble`Child of the Abyss"; 2) Kinunirša; 3) This divinity was generally regarded as female. At Eridu, however, the deity was considered male and formed part of Enki´s entourage.
