The people aren't so bad - as long as you're not there on a Friday or Saturday when all the chavs go. I went there on a week night and it was pretty quiet. It is quite pricey - with a bottle of beer costing you £5 a go - but that's pretty standard for a lot of bars here. Mind you, if there's ever an Enenuru event there the USD might even be at parity with the GBP.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but, in season 4 of Buffy, Buffy and her friends performed a Sumerian spell, to call forth the first Slayer.

Well, I can't believe this wasn't mentioned in here before given all the metal enthusiasts, but one of my favorite bands, Therion, has two songs directly related to Mesopotamian mythology.

The first is a song called the Blood of Kingu, which is about Enuma Elish. - www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAnXWeCgkEw

And the second is a song called "The Siren of the Woods", which is very mysterious and is actually a cult favorite among Therion fans. The lyrics are actually written in Akkadian, and the song is apparently about Nergal. The translation of the lyrics however, are only available on the band's private fan-club forum, but maybe some of us Enenuru will be able to translate it on our own for fun.

Poetical Works of Lord Byron

1788-1824

In the last year or two I have been taking an interest in Romantic and Gothic literature, and have often heard Byron mentioned. Perhaps my first impressions of the auther came from brief references to him while reading about the making of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Polidori's early vampire tale "The Vampyre" (Polidori was Byron's physician.) Byron became famous in English literary circles not only on account of his considerable poetic skill, but on account of his own character and charisma; he lived however a sort of Romantic tragedy from which his own poetry sprung and which inspired a surge of "Byronic" characters from authors of the time.


Having just read a biography on Byron, I am looking for the first time at his poetry itself and I am pleased to note a few poems dedicated to Assyria and Babylon - we must note of course that Byron died in 1824, and so he never lived to see the decipherment of cuneiform or the recovery of Mesopotamian language. Perhaps he would have reveled in these accomplishments - as a boy he distingished his reading from that of his peers by taking a strong interest in eastern tales such as 1000 and one nights - he had a love for the exotic and on traveling to Greece as a youth felt he had 'found his true home' - at the end of his life he returned to Greece and died promoting Greek independence. Though never a precise atheist, he had a life long detestation of religious oppression and violence, and he wrote satirically of heaven and hell which led the more pious to consider him 'satan's poet'. Nevertheless, Byron did on a few occasions take the Old Testament as inspiration for verse, though his adaptions tended to lack religious fiber - it is in these borrowings that we find his poems which speak of Babylon and Assyria, as there were no deciphered cuneiform sources to refer to in that time. The sympathies are thus regrettably Hebrew.

In CANE I, Lundquist writes on "Babylon in European Thought" - he gives special attention to the Belles Lettres, the literary greats, who write on Babylon in that time and says "the most famous example of predecipherment Babylonian literature was Byron's Hebrew Melodies of 1815. Among the poems are "Vision of Belshazzar," "By the Water of Babylon We Sat Down and Wept," and "The Destruction of Sennacherib," which begins "The Assyrian came down like a wolf on the fold." His play Sardanapalus (1821) was based, as he expressly stated in the preface to the play, on Diodorus Siculus."

In 1815, Byron was prevailed upon by a Isaac Nathan to write lyrics to some music he was composing from the "traditional airs of the synagogues." Byron was then closer to the beginning of his literary career and agreed, and the works known as "Hebrew Melodies" were underway. He wrote that he had written most of this material "partly from Job &c. & partly from my own imagination." Later, the lyrics were reformatted and presented in a volume of poems. I've selected three poems of Byron's which touch on Mesopotamia from Hebrew Melodies:

Vision of Belshazzar

[Belshazzar (Bêl-shar-usur), was the son of Nabonidus - he was put in charge by his absent father of the defense of Babylon at the time of the invasion of the Persians under Cyrus. Babylon never had a chance against the multitude of the Persian invading force. The fall of Babylon was recorded and gleefully reinterpreted by the writers of the book of Daniel, who imagined that on the night of defeat Belshazzar had been drinking with his wives from gold vessals his father stole from the temple of Solomon - at that moment, according to the biblical version of events, a mysteries hand (divinely originating?) wrote a mysterious phrase wall - eventually translated for Belshazzar, later that night, to something like "thou art weighed and found wanting". Doom followed. This is usually considered to be the origin of the the popular phrase relating to one failing to "read the writing on the wall." Byron's poem proceeds from the book of Daniel:]

The Destruction of Sennacherib

[Sennacherib (Sîn-ahhī-erība) ascended the Assyrian throne in 704 BC. He was the son of the warrior king Sargon II, and as news of his father's death broke out Sennacherib's first large task was the suppression of rebellion which broke out in all the lands his father had occupied. In the 4th year of his reign, Sennacherib attacked the rebellious kingdom of Judah - and Jerusalem itself. At this point there are differing accounts of the success of his suppresion; Sennacherib himself recorded that on the King of Jerusalem "fell the fear of the power of my arms, and he sent out to me the chiefs and the elders of Jerusalem with 30 talents of gold and 800 talents of silver, and diverse treasures, a rich and immense booty... All these things were brought to me at Nineveh, the seat of my government." However, the biblical account emphasizes, instead of base capitulation to the Assyrian, some sort of immense destruction that was visited on Sennacherib's troops by the "angel of the lord" (see the Book of Kings II), and it is from here that Byron's poem proceeds:]

Wow! Excellent band list man Thats awesome. I might even be tempted to hear some of these guys, I mean, I like metal, and have been tempted before. One page 1, and 3 of this thread, members have suggested a few others - but this master list tells me the time may finally have come to search some of this stuff out ;]


I don't really know the band Nile, and I think they aren't focused on Mesopotamian, but it was cool when last month they were mentioned on AGADE - that is, the ANE mailing list that Jack Sasson organizes. This is a professionals list dealing with, usually, Searious ANE topics. But this time, there was a review of this metal band doing ancient stuff - review read (thanks to Sheshki for pointing it out):




"One way to ensure longevity of craft is to corner a niche market. If
your niche is epic American brutal death metal with a heavy dose of
Middle Eastern instruments and guitar melodies, not to mention eight
to 10-minute songs about esoteric Egyptology entitled things like
“Hittite Dung Incantation,” you might be Nile. The new album by the
extreme metal outfit is called Those Whom the Gods Detest, and is the
long awaited successor to the band’s crowning achievement, 2004’s
Annihilation of the Wicked. 2007’s Ityphallic just didn’t measure up

“Utterances of the Crawling Dead” is a standout tune for its
incredible sense of melody and the focus of its riffs. To compare this
song to earlier albums in the band’s career would only emphasize the clarity of the band’s improved production and the superior technique of current drummer George Kolias, who made his debut on Annihilation and continues to demonstrate why he is here to stay. If one word could be used to describe his playing, it would be “tasteful,” a delicacy of a term when applied to ferocious octopus-like extreme metal drumming, and a contrast to Nile’s previous drummers. A mouthful of a title, “Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld” continues the band’s newfound cohesion between vicious thrash-metal oriented riff barrages and harmonic minor melodic fills.

Karl Sanders used to have one of the most indecipherably inhuman deathmetal grunts ever, bordering on the comic noises of slam death or porno-grind bands, but with this album his signature snarl is
surprisingly clear, almost understandable, although his rapid
exhalations of un-rhyming prose passages will still require a lyric
sheet to follow. His commitment to and fascination with ancient
Egyptian culture and history (extending even to the liner notes)
should be applauded and even appreciated by the fellow Egyptology / history buff.

Other highlights are the long title track, brutal opener and religious
critique “Kafir!” and “The Eye of Ra.” Although it’s not quite
Annihilation, the new Nile album proves they can bounce back and
maintain listener interest despite their unique brand of obscure heavy music."

A Black metalband from Saudi Arabia. Music is strict Black Metal with Oriental Melodys. The Textes are related to Arabian History(Anti islamic) And some are related to Mesopotamia as you can see on the covers. This band is kinda raw because of the bad studios they have in Saudi. Anway, i like this band, and i start review their CDs (I'am a Editor on a metal site (metal.tk)) so their reviews are online. I Also know the label chief really good, and he give me a lot of information about this band. Those are really nice Boys.

Also one of my favorites. They play Black/Death metal mixed up with Hindu Folk. The Lyrics are about History and Spirituality.. Thats a strange mix, but the music is genius. I ordered their CD and the send me a shirt too. Just for fucking 10 euros both! This guys are really cool!

This is a turkish Band, they also have just one Album. Its called " For the Empire". As youc an see, this guys are turkish Nationalists. The music is very oriental, a mix of Death, Thrash and Heavy metal.

Behemoth:
This is a really popular Death/Black metal Band.
Theres just one Album who is related to mesopotamia, and some of Egypt. Its called " Demigod". No myspace need, if youre interrested, better you get the whole Album. Tracklist:

I've just noticed a documentary on youtube called "TimeLife: The Lost Civilization of Mesopotamia". I'd say its somewhat enjoyable and discusses process of rediscovery of Mesopotamia with some interesting looks at early pioneers in the field - however, I felt the who presentation was skewed toward the Biblical angle. Yes Mesopotamian studies began with the Biblical scholars, but the documentary itself seems unwilling to come off that point and to really present the separate and more than relevant field of Assyriology and Sumerology. Nevertheless Im recommended the video to anyone who wants to see Steve Tinney, who helped develop the ePSD website among other things - first is a link to the beginning of the documentary, second a clip to the section with Tinney:

Concerning the Akkadian song by Therion, the first line, enuma ilu awiluma means "when the gods were men" and it is the ancient name for the text we know as Atrahasis. the rest of the song seems not to make much sense, but if I have time i will translate it and post it here.

I just stumbled across another sumerian inspired band "Cannibal Clan Sumer" They have sumerian tracknames, also their artist names are sumerian inspired, but the music sounds celtic to me, somehow.
