It's been a while since I've practiced German and my French is even worse shape. With the possibility of grad school in the future, I need to learn to read German and French so that I can read more Assyriological publications. Can anyone direct me to resources that might help me learn to read German or French within the next year? Maybe studying tips or advice? I want to start practicing soon! Thanks

kurnugi4a: It may be best to start with German, as people tend to find that the more difficult language to learn. The trick to learning is not so much strategy i.e. use flash cards, get a textbook, watch films with English subscript on youtube... but the trick is consistency, as my adviser tells me, you cannot learn a modern language unless you set aside at least 1/2 hour every day for it. And he is quite right, I have been on again off again studying German for years and the result is not satisfactory. So on again off again is nothing, 1/2 a day is something. Here is my favorite online German dictionary: dict.tu-chemnitz.de/Here is an excellent German verb conjugation tool (it does other languages as well) - you must enter the verb in its correct infinitive form: www.verbix.com/languages/german.shtml

Thanks for the resources us4-he2-gal2! Do you think perhaps attempting to read Assyriological articles in German would be helpful? In combination with the German dictionary you linked, it seems like I could work my way through.

At this stage, it may be more helpful to just try and absorb as many basic German words as possible. For example, learn a few hundred words form a German textbook then maybe go on to cartoon shows on youtube, the Simpsons in German for example. Try and find videos with subtitles, because hearing German words is even harder than reading German words. Read Children's books for 6 months or so..then maybe try moving on to articles. Its really, really damned hard, so set your difficulty as low as possible to start, that's my suggestion.
